Abstract

Indonesia is a country that faces a high risk of earthquakes. This is due to its geographical position at the convergence of three major tectonic plates: the Indian-Australian plate, the Pacific plate, and the Eurasian plate. These zones are potential sources of earthquakes, including megathrust earthquakes that are associated with significant strength and can trigger tsunamis. To construct earthquake-resistant homes, several principles must be considered: Building Materials: Main Structure:Reinforced Concrete:Foundation: and Building Height.Community Engagement (PkM) that provides understanding about earthquake-resistant home planning is crucial, especially in countries like Indonesia, which are prone to large earthquakes. In the village of Parbulan 4, Parbulan Subdistrict, Dairi Regency, such engagement is essential to raise awareness among the community and reduce the risk of building damage during earthquakes. The community engagement conducted by the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Planning at the Institute of Science and Technology TD. Pardede is commendable. Providing education on “Simple Earthquake-Resistant Home Planning” imparts basic knowledge to the community on how to plan and construct homes that can withstand seismic events. Effective methods for community education include material presentations, field visits, and Q&A sessions. By doing so, community members can apply this knowledge practically during home construction, thereby reducing the risk of building damage and loss of life due to earthquakes. It is hoped that such initiatives continue and are implemented in other earthquake-prone areas, further empowering communities to understand and apply earthquake-resistant building concepts, ultimately safeguarding lives and property.
